Pisces Constellation Painted Rock
Now that I have all of my things in one place again, I’m struggling with where to put it all. When I packed up my craft room in the States, I thought it was going to be for a few months at most. It’s now years later and I’m in a totally different place (in more ways than one!). While I have an absolutely lovely space, I simply have too many supplies. I’m trying to make it a goal to work my way through them without buying anything new (within reason). It’s been made slightly easier by culling out what was broken during shipping and what isn’t good anymore (sooooo much paint). For this month’s painted rock challenge on Craft Lightning, I pulled out paint that I haven’t seen in 2.5 years to attempt a Pisces Constellation Painted Rock.
While I used these exact paints, the basics are to have paint in a black, white, teal(ish) and a purple. A brush, sewing pin, and a rock finish off your supplies.
Paint the rock black to start.
I tried to follow the basic same tutorial I used in my Starry Starry Night Painted Galaxy Banner. It became clear pretty quickly that the paint wasn’t what I actually wanted–it was pretty chunky in the bottles and wasn’t pulling the colours the way I wanted. And because I was making sure I was within the 15 minute time limit (I actually set a timer when I do these projects!), I didn’t let myself fuss with it too much.
I don’t love the textures I ended up with–I would have preferred a smooth rock. I will most definitely play around with more painted rocks to see if I can improve.
For the constellation, I did a quick search online for Pisces (that’s what I am) and used the pin dipped in white to make it. I used the ball end for the stars and the sharp end to drag it through.
My painted rock isn’t what I had in my head–it will be fun to dig through my supplies and try to see if I can do better. We certainly have no shortage of rocks to play with and I’ve been taken with rock painting for years. The girls have rock collections specifically for painting so I imagine this will become a family affair. Be on the lookout for (hopefully) better galaxy rocks in the future!
