Day of the Dead Styrofoam Sugar Skull
I love sugar skulls and their beautiful designs. I’ve always been fascinated at how lovely the skulls become when they’re decorated. I was excited to be given the chance to create one for myself as I’ve never painted one before. Americana Acrylics and Neon Lights from DecoArt were the perfect paints to create an awesome Day of the Dead Styrofoam Sugar Skull.

I used a styrofoam skull from FloraCraft as my base. I took it as a challenge to change a spooky skull into a decorated sugar skull.
The paints I used are:
Americana Acrylics in Snow White and Lamp Black
Neon Lights in Pink Explosion, Knockout Blue, and Green Energy
I began by painting the skull black. I really wanted my colors to pop.
The sugar skulls I’ve seen all have the upside down heart nose, so I painted the nose pink. After that, I started doodling with my paint. I see lots of flowers, dots, and swirls on sugar skulls and used the Neon Lights for my embellishments. I painted the teeth white.
I’m pretty tickled with how my Day of the Dead Styrofoam Sugar Skull turned out. The colors are bright and the skull went from scary to pretty. It was fun to paint and play around with embellishments. If I didn’t like something, it was easy to paint black over it, wait for it to dry, and try again. I’m planning on getting more skulls so that I can make some more!
