I miss living in Edinburgh with all of my heart. I don't miss our flat (goodness no!), but the city itself has my heart and soul. Edinburgh is a bustling city full of history, architecture, modern conveniences, and secrets in every nook and cranny. Everything feels expensive these days, though, and there's plenty of that even in my favorite place. There are plenty of free things to do in Edinburgh, though, and you don't need to look too hard to find them. Whether you're a tourist or a lifelong ... Read More

Best Museums in Edinburgh
I am so missing Edinburgh and am so grateful for the time I had there. History, art, and architecture abound and I loved just walking around and taking it all in. The museum geek in me loved being able to pop into one of the many museums as I passed by. With so many museums, deciding which ones to visit can be overwhelming if you're visiting for a short time. Here is a list of the best museums in Edinburgh, where you are sure to learn something new and deepen your appreciation for the beauty and ... Read More
Where to Get American Food in Edinburgh
I LOVED our time in Edinburgh and was sad to leave. We had moved there intending to stay but it turned into a less than two year home. Reasons happen and we're pretty good at rolling with the punches but it still hits me that we're not currently on vacation and heading home to Scotland soon. The funny thing with me and expat life is that for the most part, I'm perfectly fine with having left the States. I miss my friends because we all know that I'm much better at staying in touch when I see ... Read More
Where to See Highland Cows in Edinburgh
I had a list of what I absolutely needed to do before we left Scotland and right at the top of the list was seeing Highland Cows up close. I had seen them from a distance--you just drive around the Highlands and you'll see them grazing at the side of the road--but we were getting strapped for time and couldn't really leave Edinburgh to chase the close encounter I was after. I found that I was feeling constantly panicked because my must-do list was shrinking by the day simply due to time ... Read More
The Halloween Trail at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
Edinburgh has no shortage of gorgeous autumn destinations. We've enjoyed spending our weekends puttering around the city--we're still fully into the city being new to us and are feeling the need to explore every corner. We live quite near the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, but hadn't actually visited with the girls before now. Scott and I went during our visit last year when they held the Botanic Lights (check out our Spiked Winter Cider!) and I've been eager to go back ever since. The Garden ... Read More
A Day at Craigmillar Castle
One of the first things we did when we arrived in Scotland was buy a Historic Scotland membership for the family. This gives us free access to over 300 historic sites across Scotland and I intend for us to work our way through all of them. Our first excursion with our membership was to Craigmillar Castle. Did you know that there's more than one castle in Edinburgh? You can reach it by bus in less than half an hour from the city center. It is well worth the trip out, is great fun for kids, and ...
