Winter Felt Ornaments with Cricut

Since we’re starting all over with our ornaments this year, I’m taking the opportunity to make as many as I can myself. I wanted to start with a winter theme because that’s one of my favorites, so I found a mitten, ice skates, mug, snowman, and gingerbread house and added them onto my canvas in Design Space. Between the Cricut Maker and Cricut Access, Cricut makes it so easy to make a handful or ornaments at once, which is just what I did. My Winter Felt Ornaments with Cricut are the perfect start to decorating our tree.

Supplies:

  • Cricut Maker
  • Cricut Felt
  • Cricut Washable Fabric Pen
  • assorted metallic thread
  • needle
  • scissors

I used assorted designs from Design Space for my ornaments. I just did a quick search for the type of design I was after and easily found many that would work. Some of them, like the mitten, were already set up for what I wanted to do–the design was already set to be drawn on, so all I had to do was make a second shape for the backing. The gingerbread house, though, needed the design to be switched from a cut to drawn. For the cup, I added a snowflake, made it a draw file, and attached it to the cup so that it would draw the snowflake and cut the cup at the same time. My full canvas is available for you to use so you don’t need to do anything other than cut out your felt!

Maker sure you have your pen and rotary blade ready to go!

When all the felt is cut out, you’ll have pieces for the five ornaments. Each ornament will have at least two layers of felt, not counting embellishments on the top.

Grab your thread and get ready to stitch! I suggest pouring yourself a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate, putting on a Christmas movie, and enjoying yourself.

I made a general color scheme for each ornament. For the ornaments that had the drawn design, I just stitched over it. Do your embellishment stitching and smaller felt pieces on the top felt shape. Once that’s finished, stitch the entire top onto the duplicate shape.

Stitching these ornaments takes some time. It’s a good thing they cut out so quickly! It’s nice to have everything laid out for you, too.

When all the ornaments are stitched up, attach ribbon or string so that they can hang from your tree. I just used more of my metallic thread.

These Winter Felt Ornaments with Cricut are some of my favorite ever. They’re the first ornaments I’ve made for our new life in Scotland and I love how they look on our tree. The perfectly cut felt with the hand stitching is a cozy and cheerful start to our holiday decor.
