Popsicle Stick Pot
Are you running out of ideas to keep your kids entertained this summer? It does seem to go on for ages. I’ve always thought it weird that American schools have such long summer breaks–I’ve always been a fan of having more breaks throughout the year and a shorter summer, but that’s just me. Anyway, this popsicle stick pot is super easy and will keep your kids (or you! there’s no reason you can’t join in on the fun) busy for a couple of hours.

Supplies:
- empty, cleaned food can
- popsicle sticks (about 20-30 depending on how large your can is)
- paint in your favorite colors (I like DecoArt Americana Acrylics)
- paint brushes
- glue gun
Note: You can use pre-colored popsicle sticks, but I like the idea of painting–this is about keeping kids busy for longer! Also, if you’re not comfortable with your kids using a glue gun, it’s fine to use regular glue–just do the extra step of tying twine or ribbon around the pot at the end.
Directions:
Make sure that your food can is washed and completely dried. Set aside.
On a covered surface, paint an even number of popsicle sticks in both colors that you’ll be using. You may need to paint 1-2 layers, depending on the thickness of the paint. Let them dry completely.
Once the popsicle sticks have completely dried, heat up the glue gun. Again, regular glue is fine–I honestly didn’t have any when I made this!
Spread a dollop of glue on each end of the back of a painted popsicle stick and quickly but carefully adhere to the side of the can, making sure that it is completely straight.
Continue the process of adhering the popsicle sticks to the can, switching between both colors.
Once the can has been completely covered, set aside for 5 minutes to allow the hot glue to completely dry. Tie twine/ribbon/yarn around the can if you want!
Fill the can with soil and your choice of plant. Not only do your kids have a popsicle stick pot, now they have a plant to take care of.
Tips
Don’t worry if there is a bit of can exposed after all popsicle sticks have been applied- just turn that side to the back! There’s also the option of painting the can itself before you glue on the popsicle sticks.
This craft can be made to hold many different things like paint brushes, pens and pencils, makeup brushes, etc.
It’s easy to further embellish this popsicle stick pot with stickers, buttons, sequins…you name it!
